Site Safety
Safety is the
primary concern of both the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Contractors
during all operations of the blasting and dredging project. J.E. McAmis
is working closely with the Corps, Pilots Association, U.S. Coast Guard,
Sheriffs'
offices and the public to make sure everyone is informed of
the project sequence and blasting locations. Information, communication
and respect for the varied interests on the river are keys to keeping
our employees, shippers and the general public safety throughout the
project.
Fisherman and
pleasure boaters planning to be on the Columbia or lower Lewis Rivers
should be aware that a safety zone
will be established prior to blasting operations
scheduled to occur each day. The safety zone will preclude passage in
the river resulting in some minor delays. The river will be open to
shipping traffic but boaters should be especially cautious and pay
attention to instructions from safety personnel so as not to
inadvertently float into the blast zone. Boaters are asked to exercise
caution and respect the instructions from contractors
working to implement this project while continuing to provide
access to public lands and waters.
Watch
for these signs on the river.
A 1,500 ft
safety zone is planned for both upstream and
downstream from blasting operations. When a vessel
approaches
these signs, the drill boat must be contacted
on
Marine VHF Channel 16
for permission to navigate
through. Paddlers and recreational boaters without marine
radios can call the Marine
Transportation Coordinator
cell phone on the drill boat
(503) 396-9893.
This cell number
will be posted at local boat launches and marinas.
The project site will be patrolled by security guards and
heavy fines imposed on boaters entering the safety zone
during restricted time.
